Tonda Eckert can blow. Involved in the Spygate scandal that shook Southampton last season, the German coach was sanctioned by the English Federation, but he avoids an immediate suspension.

The FA fined him £28,000 and suspended him for six weeks. The latter, however, was suspended until the end of the 2027-2028 season. Eckert will therefore be able to continue to lead Southampton unless he is again involved in a similar offence.

Eckert acknowledges that it authorized the operations

The Southampton coach admitted that he had allowed three opponents last season to observe the workouts: Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough. The FA sanctioned three violations of its disciplinary regulations.

The case broke out after sending members of the staff to monitor the opponent's training. Southampton had observed Middlesbrough before their play-offs semifinal.

Eckert then assumed responsibility for this matter. The independent commission finally held a six-week suspension, but suspended, as well as a fine and official warning.

Southampton had already paid heavily

The individual penalty comes several months after the heavy sporting consequences inflicted on Southampton. The club had been excluded from the Championship's play-offs after recognizing several offences related to the surveillance of its opponents.

The Saints also received a four-point penalty for the 2026-2027 season. Southampton is currently 13th in the Championship with 10 points after eight days.

With this decision of the FA, Eckert therefore retains his position. His next game will be particularly expected as he is to lead Southampton in the derby against Portsmouth this weekend.
