Ramon Vega wants to attack Gianni Infantino. The former Swiss international defender announced his intention to run for the FIFA presidency in the election scheduled for March 2027 in Rabat. He thus became the first opponent to publicly display his ambitions against the outgoing president.

Ramon Vega wants to reform FIFA

At 55, Ramon Vega intends to propose a new direction to FIFA. In his manifesto, the former player of Tottenham, Celtic and Watford promises to"reuniting the world football family"to modernize the body and restore its credibility.

Switzerland also wants to review FIFA's governance, with greater involvement of the various players in football in the decisions taken at the institution's summit. Its project is based on reforms which it presents as lasting and aimed at restoring confidence.

An application in a tense context for Infantino

This announcement comes in a turbulent period for Gianni Infantino. The FIFA President faces criticism after abandoning his plan to open a commercial structure of the forum to private investors. This initiative had caused strong tensions with several players in global football, particularly in Europe.

Infantino, who has been running FIFA since 2016, has already announced his willingness to run for a new term. Despite the criticism, he remains considered the great favourite of the next election.

Vega still needs to validate her application

Ramon Vegan, however, is not his first attempt. The former Swiss international had already considered an application in 2015, then in 2019 and 2022. He had never managed to secure the necessary support to complete his approach.

In order to participate in the election, he will have to obtain the support of at least five member federations and meet the conditions of eligibility and integrity control provided by FIFA. The deadline for submission of applications is18 november 2026. Vega claims this time to have the necessary support.

The FIFA presidential election will take place on18 March 2027 in Rabat, Morocco. For now, Ramon Vega is the first opponent to publicly declare his ambitions against Gianni Infantino.
