The NBA has just suffered a serious setback in its European project. EuroLeague's shareholder clubs rejected its proposal for collaboration. A frying failure for American basketball;

Gathered near Lake Como, representatives of the 13 shareholder clubs decided after studying the NBA project. This decision paves the way for a battle for the best clubs, players and European basketball revenues.

However, the door does not seem completely closed. The EuroLeague remains open to future discussions with the NBA, even if possible collaboration is not expected until 2028.

The EuroLeague wants to advance alone

At the same time, the clubs validated the transition to a franchise model. The change must offer them a more sustainable participation in the competition, as opposed to the current licences.

The EuroLeague also wants to continue its expansion project. The competition could increase from 20 to 24 teams, although no final decision has yet been taken on this point.

New permanent licences could be issued in the coming month. Up to eight places could be affected, while the others would be distributed via temporary licences, invitations or sports qualification.

NBA maintains offensive

This refusal is a blow to the NBA project. The American league aims to launch a European competition of 16 teams by 2027.

However, the NBA enjoys growing popularity on the continent. In particular, EuroLeague recorded an 82% increase in its television audience during the first 25 days of the 2025-2026 season, while the NBA continues to expand its presence through its games and broadcast agreements.

Both sides therefore remain faced with a strategic choice. They can still negotiate a collaboration or pursue their own European project.
